This course provides a systematic introduction to the fundamental principles governing the structure and properties of matter at the macroscopic, atomic, and molecular levels.
It begins with the fundamental concepts of matter, including its different states, transformations, atomic and molecular masses, the mole, and the quantitative aspects of chemical reactions.
The course then examines the fundamental constituents of matter and the structure of the atomic nucleus, with particular emphasis on isotopes, nuclear stability, and nuclear binding energy.
The principles of natural and artificial radioactivity, radioactive decay, nuclear reactions, and their applications are subsequently introduced.
The electronic structure of atoms is developed through wave-particle duality, the interaction of light with matter, the Bohr model, and the principles of wave mechanics.
The periodic classification of elements is studied together with the periodic variation of their physicochemical properties, including atomic and ionic radii, ionization energies, and electronegativity.
The course concludes with the fundamental concepts of chemical bonding, covering Lewis theory, bond polarity, dipole moments, molecular geometry, and the quantum description of bonding.
