A standard refers to a set of specifications describing an object, a being or a way of operating. This results in a principle serving as a rule and technical reference. A standard is not mandatory, its adherence is a voluntary act. Some are made mandatory by a regulatory text or decree of law. A standard is mandatory when it is cited in a regulatory text (order) as the only way to meet the requirements of this text. Beware of confusion between Standard and Norm. The standard results from a more restricted consensus than for the norm, it is developed between manufacturers within consortia and not by national organizations. The difference is however slight and the Anglo-Saxons use the term "standard" to designate a norm.
