This course aims to deepen the understanding of Master 2 students in Educational Sociology regarding the structural relationship between the educational system and the economy. It explores the theoretical foundations and analytical approaches that explain how investment in education contributes to social and economic development. The course focuses on examining the economic dimensions of the educational process, analyzing the mechanisms through which financial and human resources are allocated within educational institutions, and assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of educational systems in responding to labor market demands and broader social transformations.

The course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the major intellectual traditions that have shaped the field of the Economics of Education, including Human Capital Theory, theories of returns to education, and the contemporary economic perspectives on schooling. It also investigates the relationship between education and development, the impact of public policies on educational financing and quality, and the socio-economic consequences of educational inequalities on social cohesion and sustainable development.

In addition, the course trains students to analyze educational and financial indicators, interpret data related to education as a socio-economic phenomenon, and employ tools used to evaluate efficiency, equity, and effectiveness within the education sector. It further aims to enhance students’ capacity to critically assess educational policies and to develop evidence-based alternatives grounded in modern sociological and economic perspectives.

This course represents a foundational component in the academic training of future researchers specializing in the sociology of education. It equips them with a comprehensive understanding of the economic dynamics that shape educational systems and their role in development, while providing them with the analytical skills necessary to conduct rigorous field studies and evaluation research—particularly those related to their master dissertations and future academic or professional projects in the field of educational sociology.
