The Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering course covers the study of the molecular mechanisms governing cellular function, including DNA replication, transcription, protein translation, and genetic regulation mechanisms. The genetic engineering section addresses techniques for manipulating genetic material, such as PCR, gene cloning, genome editing, and the application of these methods in fields like medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. The course also explores the ethical implications and industrial applications of modern biotechnology.

By the end of this chapter, students will be able to:
- Define gene expression and explain its role in protein synthesis.
- Describe the main stages of gene expression: transcription and translation.
- Explain the process of transcription and the role of RNA polymerase.
- Identify the template and coding DNA strands and determine the corresponding mRNA sequence.
- Describe the main steps of transcription: initiation, elongation, and termination.
- Explain mRNA processing in eukaryotic cells, including 5′ capping, polyadenylation, and splicing.
- Explain the process of translation and the roles of mRNA, tRNA, and ribosomes.
- Use the genetic code to determine the amino acid sequence of a protein.
- Apply their knowledge to solve problems and interpret molecular biology exercises.
