This course introduces the fundamental principles of Strength of Materials (S.O.M), focusing on how structural elements behave under various types of loads. Students will learn to analyze internal forces, stresses, and deformations in structural members and apply these concepts to the design of simple engineering structures. The course combines theoretical foundations with practical problem-solving, preparing students for applications in structural and civil engineering.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
-
Understand the fundamental concepts and objectives of Strength of Materials.
-
Calculate support reactions using equilibrium equations.
-
Determine internal forces (normal force, shear force, bending moment).
-
Analyze stress, deformation, and elongation in structural elements.
-
Construct and interpret shear force diagrams (SFD) and bending moment diagrams (BMD).
-
Evaluate the strength and stiffness of simple structural members.
