This course offers a comprehensive introduction to major linguistic theories and phonetic systems of the 20th century. It examines the contributions of Saussure, Bloomfield, Sapir, and Chomsky, with a focus on the structural, functional, and mentalist schools of linguistics in Europe and America. Interdisciplinary perspectives from sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and applied linguistics are also explored. In addition, students will gain foundational knowledge in phonetics and phonology: the International Phonetic Alphabet, the British transcription system, and the distribution and function of word stress. In the second semester, the course addresses sentence stress, intonation and aspects of connected speech: weak forms, linking, elision, juncture and assimilation.

The late 18th and 19th centuries were critical in the shaping of contemporary Britain. The course looks into those transformations that were brought about by the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions, and the political and social upheavals and reforms of the 19th century. The course also tackles the rise and expansion of the British Empire and the ideologies behind what historian John Darwin calls the "British World-System." In that sense, the present course handout aims at providing Second year students of English Language Studies (Licence 2) with the lectures and some suggested documents that cover the Civilization course.
