Cellular signaling refers to the communication system used by the cells of multicellular organisms. It relies in part on the secretion of chemical signals (ligands), which may be hormones, neurotransmitters, growth factors,...etc. or physical signals such as the sensory agents (light and sound, mechanical and thermal shock). Depending on the type of signal, the consequences at the cellular function will be cell survival, proliferation and or differentiation, cell migration, secretion, ...etc.. In fact, the absence of some signals and the presence of another leads to cell death by necrosis or apoptosis. Therefore, Cell communication is facilitated by several signaling agents.
